Q: What is the method of how to open them? Do you need to have a separate tool for that?

The best way to open them is to take a large file & carefully cut a groove around the Geode along any depressions in the shape. Place in on a towel on a concrete floor. Be sure to put on safety glasses! Take a large chisel and place it in the groove. Strike the end of the chisel with a hammer to break the Geode open. Be careful everyone standing near has their safety gasses on as well!

Q: Can use a sharp,big knife or if not, what do you use

Please do not even consider attempting this with a knife. That is an E.R. trip in the making. We were quite successful with a hammer and wide chisel.
